Michael Butterman

Hi everyone,

Happy Spring! We're looking forward to seeing you on Sunday the 11th for our next orKIDStra performance, as we welcome back the ever-popular Jay Stetzer. Jay will be playing the role of the title character in a brilliant work called Mr. Smith's Composition.

The piece takes us inside the mind of a composer as he struggles to bring his ideas to life. We hear him come up with ideas, try them out in various ways, and eventually work them into a finished product. Or almost. We find, at the end, that he needs our help to make a decision about the big finale, so you'll have a chance to have your say!

Earlier on, we'll explore the ways that composers convey their moods and feelings, and even hear from a live composer, our own Wesley Nance. Wes plays in our trumpet section, but is also an accomplished composer and arranger who will be sharing some of the creative process that resulted in his Children's Songs—a series of short pieces that were inspired by his own experience of being a parent.

We'll also have an opportunity for a few children to join us on stage to help us illustrate the concept of "beginning-middle-end" as it applies to musical melodies. That's actually a lot more fun to see than to describe in words! (As an example, click here to download a copy of some mixed-up animals for kids to color.)

Of course, we're also excited about our big season finale, The Firebird, in May at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, in which the classic tale is brought to life not only with music, but also through larger-than-life shadow puppets.

And next season promises more fun and novelty as we revisit Prokofiev's classic (but with a theatrical twist) in Peter vs. the Wolf and launch the RPO's new family-oriented CD containing Babar the Elephant and A Family for Baby Grand. (Those of you who attended the Babar concert in February got a little taste of how the CD will sound.)

Plus, next season we’ll have a special family matinee of Bugs Bunny at the Symphony. Click here for the full 2010-11 brochure with information on how to subscribe.

Until then, please join us on Sunday for a little family time with your RPO. See you at Hochstein...

This Sunday: Family Concert Shows Kids How to Compose Music

In the next orKIDStra Series concert, Mr. Smith's Composition will take you on a hilarious and educational journey into the mind of Mr. Smith as he composes. You’ll hear him consider whether to write a waltz or a march, a fast piece or a slow one, and along the way introduce children to different instruments and different styles of music. The audience even gets to choose the final ending!

Michael Butterman leads the RPO in this fun, interactive program, with Jay Stetzer narrating. The concert also includes music by Bizet, George Walker, and the RPO’s own Wesley Nance. Click here for an audio preview. Visit the RPO blog to hear more from Michael about the concert.

Sunday, April 11 at 2:00 pm at Performance Hall at Hochstein, 50 North Plymouth Avenue. Pre-concert activities related to composing begin at 1:00 pm.

Tickets are $10 for children, $15 for adults. Call 454-2100, or use this link to buy tickets online.
