In honor of Mother’s Day, all mothers and grandmothers will get in for free with the purchase of any child’s ticket* for this final orKIDStra family concert of the season!

You’ll delight in amazing, larger-than-life shadow puppetry from the Underground Railway Theater as it brings to life the Russian fairy tale The Firebird. This is a breathtakingly beautiful story of friendship between a boy and the mythical bird, with three actors portraying all the characters while the RPO plays Stravinsky’s dramatic music.

Michael Butterman conducts the RPO in a program that also includes music from Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake and The White Peacock by American composer Charles Tomlinson Griffes.

Pre-concert activities begin at 1:00 pm in Room 120 at the Eastman School of Music and include craft activities for kids and their moms, in honor of Mother’s Day.

Showhouse Opens May 22 – Get Your Tickets Now to Opening Night Gala

Symphony Showhouse 2010 features a "Duet of Cottages," with two newly constructed houses—the "Pops House" and the "Philharmonics House"—built by Ketmar Development Corporation. Forty area designers created each of the 54 rooms and spaces inspired by music from the RPO. Visit the RPO blog to read how designer Darcy Paddock was inspired by Carmina Burana in her design for the laundry room.

And be the first to see the completed Symphony Showhouse 2010 at Opening Night Gala on Friday, May 21. Beginning at 5:30 pm, you’ll have a chance to tour the Showhouse and meet the designers. Watch as Maestro Christopher Seaman demonstrates how he makes his conducting batons at the Philharmonics House. And in the Pops House, see a demonstration of a computer composer's station, modeled after the one Jeff Tyzik uses to compose his music. On Friday, May 28 and Saturday, May 29 at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, we celebrate the centennial of jazz masters Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw. Born just a year apart, these two legendary musicians were considered musical giants in a new world of "Swing" and "Big Band."

Clarinetist Dave Bennett and his quintet will join Jeff Tyzik and the RPO for classics like Airmail Special, Begin the Beguine, Stompin’ at the Savoy, Bugle Call Rag, and more.

RPO and Community Choir Perform Gospel Concert at Kodak Hall

The sounds of orchestra and gospel voices will blend together to become one community in The Glory of Gospel on Sunday, May 30 at 7:00 pm at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre.

Jeff Tyzik conducts a community gospel choir organized by Julius Dicks in Richard Smallwood's Total Praise, Jeff’s own gospel version of Handel's Hallelujah Chorus, and more. Featured soloists include soprano Elena O’Connor and trumpeter Herb Smith.

Tickets will be sold under a "pay what you can" policy with a suggested minimum donation of $5 and general admission seating. Tickets may be purchased in advance in-person at the RPO Box Office or at the door one hour prior to the concert.

Next Tuesday on WXXI 91.5 FM

Tune in next Tuesday, May 11, at 8:00 pm to hear Christopher Seaman lead the RPO in the world premiere of Jeff Tyzik’s Timpani Concerto, featuring timpanist Charles Ross. The program also includes music by Brahms and Debussy. Click here for more information.
