Dramatic Verdi Requiem Concludes Philharmonics Season

Thursday, May 20 at 7:30 pm
Saturday, May 22 at 8:00 pm

Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre

Christopher Seaman concludes the historic first Philharmonics season in Kodak Hall with the magnificent Verdi Requiem, featuring the Rochester Oratorio Society and four wonderful soloists: soprano Arianna Zukerman, mezzo-soprano Nancy Maultsby, tenor Scott Ramsay, and bass Gustav Andreasson. (Click here to read their bios.)

One of Italy’s greatest opera composers, Giuseppe Verdi wrote his Requiem Mass inspired by his high esteem for two fellow artists: composer Gioachino Rossini and patriotic author Alessandro Manzoni. The result is a dramatic, awe-inspiring work of imposing power. Don’t miss the concert experience of a lifetime!

Christopher Seaman hosts the First Niagara Pre-Concert Chat at 6:30 pm on Thursday and 7:00 pm on Saturday. Use this link for an audio preview.

Tickets start at $22. Complimentary sweets from Hedonist Chocolates will be provided to all box seat ticket holders. Call 454-2100, or use this link to purchase online.

The Philharmonics Series is sponsored by the Eastman Kodak Company and Bausch & Lomb. Pre-Concert Chats sponsored by First Niagara. Media sponsor is WHAM 1180.

RPO Symphony Showhouse Opens Next Week!

May 22-June 13
The Cottages at Malvern Hills, Pittsford

Every room is a symphony! Symphony Showhouse 2010 features a "Duet of Cottages," with two newly constructed houses—the "Pops House" and the "Philharmonics House"—built by Ketmar Development Corporation. Forty interior designers, artists, and craftsmen have donated their services to transform the homes’ 54 rooms and spaces, with each room reflecting a designer’s unique style.

For this year’s Showhouse—the RPO’s sixth—designers were asked choose a specific piece of music performed by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra to inspire them. Visit the RPO blog to read more about how the designers have incorporated their chosen musical theme into their design.

Among the featured rooms this year, there is a home theater with state-of-the-art entertainment electronics, a rec room with a custom-made coffee station, exquisite master bedrooms with walk-in closets, and a laundry room with a built-in dog wash. Strong National Museum of Play designed the family playroom.

The two garages will serve as Noteworthy’s Boutique, the premiere place to shop for one-of-a-kind handcrafted items, including unique glass, art, painted furniture, jewelry, and antiques. In addition, the designer items in the rooms will be available for purchase.

Public tours are Tuesdays through Thursdays from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm; and Fridays through Sundays from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm.

Tour tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door. Click here to purchase online, or call the RPO Box Office at 454-2100. Advance tickets also are available at Wegmans and all Rochester AAA branches. All proceeds from the Symphony Showhouse support the RPO's Music Education & Community Engagement Programs.

There also will be a variety of special events, including Opening Night, Chef’s Nights, Build-a-Showhouse Family Play Day, Designer "Drop-in Talks," Wine & Jazz Night, Lights-out Party, and more. For more information, visit www.rposhowhouse.org or call (585) 454-2100.

RPO Principal Flutist Rebecca Gilbert and her husband Gavin Rigg are happy to announce the birth of their son, Julian Rhys Gilbert-Rigg on April 27, 2010 at 3:12 am.

Advanced for his age, baby Julian arrived two weeks ahead of his May 11 due date. He weighed in at an athletic 6 pounds, 8 ounces and was 20 inches long. His father expects to have him in shape for the Lilac 5k later this month or perhaps the Pittsford Triathlon in June. Having appeared with the RPO in his Mom for the last nine months, Julian is displaying remarkable musical aptitude. He has his mother's powerful lungs and his father's big, strong hands with long graceful fingers. Future flutist? Pianist? Violin virtuoso? Or, music director, perhaps? It's too soon to say.
