Calling All Fans of Interior Design – Today and Thursday, Save $3 on
RPO Showhouse When You Buy Tickets at the Door

May 22-June 13
The Cottages at Malvern Hills, Pittsford
(Click here for a map and directions)

Calling all HGTV addicts! Home decorators, do-it-yourself-ers, and fans of interior design have a great excuse to put down their television remotes. Now through June 13, the "Pops House" and the "Philharmonics House"—two newly constructed homes built by Ketmar Development Corporation—will be the place to go to see homes like Rochester’s never seen before.

Forty leading interior designers, artists, and craftsmen from Rochester to New York City have transformed 54 rooms and spaces, with each room reflecting a designer’s unique style. Click here for a video preview. On June 2 and 3 – tickets will be $15 at the door! Mention this special offer and save!

Designing on a budget? Be inspired by the Vintage French room decorated by designer Susanna Kopp, who turns unloved castoffs into hand-painted treasures. Susanna will be talking about her eco-friendly techniques at a Designer "Drop-in Talk" on Thursday, June 10. Click here to read her story on the RPO blog.

You can also visit Showhouse to get ideas on how to add decorative pillows and throws to create a splash of color; add unique elements like a statue, mirror, or print to draw the eye; or add an orange accent wall to make a bold statement. Use this link to view "before and after" photos of Showhouse on the RPO Facebook page.

In addition to the treasures you’ll find in the two Noteworthy boutiques (need a gift for an upcoming graduation or wedding?), the designer items in the rooms will be available for purchase. There are many finds under $100—including game-themed prints, multicolor baskets, vases, candlesticks, statuettes, and more. A twisted wall clock in the Phils House basement has been very popular.

This Thursday, Mike O'BrianThe Getaway Guy!—will be taping a segment of his YNN feature at Showhouse, to air on Saturday, June 5. Mike will be at Showhouse on Saturday between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, meeting people and signing copies of his book 50 Getaways in New York State, which will be available at the discounted price of $10 per book (regularly $14.95).

Public tours of Showhouse are Tuesdays through Thursdays from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm; and Fridays through Sundays from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. Tour tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door. Click here to purchase online, or call the RPO Box Office at 454-2100. Advance tickets also available at Wegmans and all Rochester AAA branches.

THIS SATURDAY: Kids Can "Build-a-Showhouse" at Family Play Day

Saturday, June 5 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm
RPO Symphony Showhouse, The Cottages at Malvern Hills, Pittsford

This Saturday, a room-sized, cardboard Showhouse created by Buffalo cardboard artist Lou Iannone will be set up under a tent at the RPO Symphony Showhouse, and children will be able to create furnishings and decorations from cardboard to complete the "mini" Showhouse. Once completed, the cardboard house will be on display at the Strong National Museum of Play.

Families also can try the RPO’s Instrument Petting Zoo, tour the adjacent cottage-style homes, and walk on the beautifully landscaped trail. The "Pops House" features a family playroom created by the Strong National Museum of Play with slinky wall sconces, a giant Scrabble wall art, and a display of classic toys. At Saturday’s event, Strong Museum will be giving away tickets good for a free ride on the carousel and/or train when visiting Mindbender Mansion (offer good only through June 13).

Tickets for Family Play Day are $25 for a family of four, with $10 for each additional adult and $3/child age 12 and under. Family Play Day tickets are available at Showhouse on Saturday, or during the week by phone at the RPO Box Office (585) 454-2100 or in-person at 108 East Avenue. Drivers are encouraged to use the continuous shuttle service at the rear lot of Barker Road Middle School, 75 Barker Road.

In addition to Showhouse tours, there are a variety of special events still to come, including Chef’s Nights, talks on landscaping and travel photography, Wine & Jazz Night, and the Lights Out Closing Night Party.

We talked with celebrity chef Carol Tabone about the menu for her chef demonstration on Sunday, June 6 at 6:00 pm. Although she has retired as director of The Cooking School at Jungle Jim’s International market in Cincinnati, she continues to teach and now leads gourmet travel experiences for foodies with wanderlust. On Saturday, June 5 at 6:00 pm, Democrat and Chronicle wine columnist Holly Howell present a wine seminar and tasting of wines from America, Argentina, and Australia. Included in your special evening will be a private tour of the Showhouse, hors d’oeuvres, and a jazz concert by an ensemble of RPO musicians.

And don’t miss the Lights Out Closing Night Party on Sunday, June 13 at 6:00 pm, which includes a light supper, live music by Four on the Floor, and an auction of leftovers of all sorts. This is also your only chance to photograph Showhouse.

RPO joins Empire State Lyric Theatre for L’elisir d’amore

Saturday, June 5 at 7:30 pm
Sunday, June 6 at 2:00 pm

Kilbourn Hall at Eastman Theatre

For the first time, the RPO is collaborating with Empire State Lyric Theatre (ESLT) in their elegant, in-concert performance of Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore (The Elixir of Love), with ESLT Artistic Director Raffaele Ponti conducting the 40-piece orchestra, cast of five professional singers, and a chorus of 12 local singers.

One of Donizetti’s most frequently performed operas, The Elixir of Love is a timeless, wistful look at love and longing, pathos and youthful exuberance. It’s the story of a bashful and naïve farm laborer who falls in love with the boss’s daughter, and buys a love potion from a traveling salesman, unaware that the "magic" elixir is only wine. Hilarity and drama ensue, and love triumphs in the end.

Tickets start at $20. Call 454-2100, or use this link to purchase online.
