Audiences to Get Free Preview of Upcoming RPO Veterans Recording

January 18, 2008

Rochester, NY – The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra provides a free preview of its upcoming recording, a tribute to war veterans with Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik in Honor: An American Salute, the Around the Town concert on Wednesday, January 30 at 7:30 p.m. at Pittsford Sutherland High School (55 Sutherland Street) in the Village of Pittsford.

Tyzik opens the concert with the traditional Star-Spangled Banner, then dons his composer’s hat for Fantasy on American Themes, Bravo! Colorado – dedicated to the memory of President Gerald Ford, a World War II Navy veteran, Pleasant Valley Suite, his own arrangement of the Armed Forces Song Medley and Sousa’s uplifting Stars and Stripes Forever.  Tyzik met President Ford during the RPO’s summer residency at the Bravo! Colorado Vail Valley Music Festival.  Pleasant Valley Suite has a local slant, having been commissioned by the Genesee Country Village & Museum to commemorate its 25th Anniversary in 2003.

Honor: An American Salute will be recorded in March, with a planned released by Armed Forces Day on May 17, 2008.  The Bank of America Charitable Foundation donated $50,000 in grant money which makes this recording possible.

The Around the Town program is a community partnership in which the RPO moves from the concert hall into various neighborhoods to perform six free concerts per year designed to engage audiences with light classics and familiar favorites.  Venues include houses of worship and other community locations.  The partner venues assist with promoting the concert in their neighborhood and serve as liaison between the RPO and their community.  Around the Town concerts are sponsored by The Gannett Foundation, The Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation, RG&E and the Rochester Area Community Foundation.

Celebrating its 85th season in 2007-08, the RPO inspires and enriches the community through the art of music.  The Orchestra is passionately dedicated to outstanding musical performance at the highest artistic levels, and has a unique tradition of musical versatility, commitment to music education in the broadest sense and a deep and enduring engagement with the community.  The RPO has been honored with the New York State Governor’s Arts Award and two recent ASCAP awards for adventurous programming.
