Guest Conductor Mandarano Brings "Sounds All Around Us" to Hochstein

Rochester, NY – A musical tour through animal country and stormy weather are on the itinerary, guided by special guest conductor Mark Mandarano at the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra’s Sounds All Around Us, the second orKIDStra series concert on Sunday, February 3, 2008 at 2 p.m. at the Performance Hall at Hochstein.  Although ideal for children of all ages, orKIDStra concerts are designed for families with young children ages 3-9.

The concert begins with lively farm animals in Barnyard Blues, features a furry friend in Waltzing Cat and continues thematically in Flight of the Bumblebee, culminating in Prokofiev’s beloved tale, Peter and the Wolf.  Not to be outdone are the slow movers: Tortoises and the Elephant, both from Saint-Saëns delightful fairytale Carnival of the Animals.  Audiences will stay safe and warm despite the wind from Benjamin Britten’s Storm and the crashing Thunder and Lightning Polka by the Waltz King, Johann Strauss.   At 1:00 p.m., pre-concert activities will include a demonstration by Eastman School of Music clarinetists and an opportunity for kids to make their own wind kazoos.

A popular RPO orKIDStra conductor, Mandarano is Principal Guest Conductor of the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, prior to which he completed a four-year tenure with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra.  As a 2005 participant in the National Conductor Institute with Leonard Slatkin, he conducted the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

General admission tickets are $15 for adults; $10 for kids, available online 24/7 at www.rpo.org, by phone (454-2100) and in person from the RPO Box Office.  RPO Box Office Hours are Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. (non-concert Saturdays, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.).

Celebrating its 85th season in 2007-08, the RPO inspires and enriches the community through the art of music.  The Orchestra is passionately dedicated to outstanding musical performance at the highest artistic levels, and has a unique tradition of musical versatility, commitment to music education in the broadest sense and a deep and enduring engagement with the community.  The RPO has been honored with the New York State Governor’s Arts Award and two recent ASCAP awards for adventurous programming. OrKIDStra concerts are sponsored by Wendy’s Restaurants.  RPO performances are made possible in part with grants from the National Endowment for the Arts; the New York State Council on the Arts, a State Agency; the State of New York; Monroe County; and the City of Rochester.
