RPO orKIDStra Concert Looks at Everyday Heroes for Inspiration

March 20, 2008

Brass Players from RPO, RPYO and Hochstein Join Forces

Rochester, NY – Looking at heroes for inspiration guides composers as it does the rest of us, as the next Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra’s orKIDStra concert will demonstrate.  On Sunday, April 13, at 2 p.m. at the Performance Hall at Hochstein, Principal Conductor for Education and Outreach Michael Butterman (The Louise and Henry Epstein Family Chair) leads the RPO in “Everyday Heroes.”  Although ideal for children of all ages, orKIDStra concerts are designed for families with young children ages 3-9.

Using short pieces and musical excerpts, Butterman leads the RPO in pieces inspired by historical figures and legends such as William Tell and John Henry, as well as music inspired by other composers, performers, family, friends and places.  A special new brass piece will be premiered, composed by RPYO trumpeter Evan Henry, a student of RPO trumpeter Wesley Nance.  Additional composers include Rossini, Copland, Britten, Mozart, Bach, Elgar, Richard Strauss and Tylman Susato.  The RPO’s brass section is joined by the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra Brass and the Hochstein Brass for a true “brass extravaganza.”

Prior to the concert, the low brass gets to shine in a 1 p.m. pre-concert demonstration by “Just Another Tuba Quartet,” a group of Eastman School of Music tuba and euphonium students.  Children also will have an opportunity to make their own percussion instruments, which they will be able to use during specific parts of the concert.

General admission tickets are $15 for adults; $10 for kids, available online 24/7 at www.rpo.org, by phone (454-2100) and in person from the RPO Box Office.  RPO Box Office Hours are Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. (non-concert Saturdays, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.).

Celebrating its 85th season in 2007-08, the RPO inspires and enriches the community through the art of music.  The Orchestra is passionately dedicated to outstanding musical performance at the highest artistic levels, and has a unique tradition of musical versatility, commitment to music education in the broadest sense and a deep and enduring engagement with the community.  The RPO has been honored with the New York State Governor’s Arts Award and two recent ASCAP awards for adventurous programming.

The RPO’s orKIDStra concerts are sponsored by Wendy’s Restaurants.  RPO performances are made possible in part with grants from the National Endowment for the Arts; the New York State Council on the Arts, a State Agency; the State of New York; Monroe County; and the City of Rochester.
