RPO Goes Lighthearted on Mother's Day With Legendary Pops Master Leroy Anderson In Casual Sunday Matinee

April 17, 2008

Celebrating Anderson’s 100th Birthday, Favorites to Include “The Syncopated Clock” and “The Typewriter”

Rochester, NY – For light and entertaining music that’s steeped in American popular culture, A Tribute to Leroy Anderson –  the fourth and final concert in the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra’s Casual Sunday Matinee Series – provides an enjoyable afternoon and a perfect Mother’s Day outing.  Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik leads the orchestra at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 11 at the Eastman Theatre.  Ticketholders are invited to Bagels with Jeff in the Atrium at Miller Center beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Described as ‘light concert music,’ many of Leroy Anderson’s pieces were popularized as themes for both radio and television.  The RPO looks back into TV history with its rendition of The Syncopated Clock, used for CBS-TV’s “The Late Show.”  With creative use of the instruments in the orchestra, clarinets take center stage in Clarinet Candy, the string section shines in Fiddle-Faddle and Jazz Pizzicato, and the trumpets strut their stuff in the ever-popular Bugler’s Holiday and the melodious Trumpeter’s Lullaby. Blue Tango, No. 1 on the 1952 Hit Parade, recreates the optimistic spirit of the times.  Originally trained as a trombonist, Anderson composed many pieces specifically for the Boston Pops Orchestra under Director Arthur Fiedler.

General admission tickets are $15; $12 for seniors, students, subscribers and members, available online 24/7 at www.rpo.org, by phone (454-2100) in person from the RPO Box Office, Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. (non-concert Saturdays, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.); and seven days a week at area Wegmans.  A convenience fee may apply.

The Casual Sunday Matinee Series is sponsored by The Democrat and Chronicle and Strong Health; bagels and coffee are generously provided by Bruegger’s Bakeries.  RPO performances are made possible in part with grants from the National Endowment for the Arts; the New York State Council on the Arts, a State Agency; the State of New York; Monroe County and the City of Rochester.

Celebrating its 85th season in 2007-08, the RPO inspires and enriches the community through the art of music.  The Orchestra is passionately dedicated to outstanding musical performance at the highest artistic levels, and has a unique tradition of musical versatility, commitment to music education in the broadest sense and a deep and enduring engagement with the community.  The RPO has been honored with the New York State Governor’s Arts Award and two recent ASCAP awards for adventurous programming.
