RPO and Guest Conductor Bring Music Around The Town
March 11, 2009
Victor and Rochester are recipients of free RPO concerts
Rochester, NY – Two free Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra concerts bring music from film, opera, and ballet to Victor and Rochester with guest conductor Paul Shewan on Saturday, March 28 and Thursday, April 2 as part of its informal Around the Town series. Through performances of film music by John Williams; operatic selections by Verdi, Rossini, Puccini, and George Gershwin; and ballet music by Igor Stravinsky; audience participation and discussion are encouraged.
The concert venues and times are as follows:
• Saturday, March 28 at 7:30 pm at Victor Senior High School (953 High Street, Victor)
• Thursday, April 2 at 7:30 pm at Church of Love Faith Center (700 Exchange Street, Rochester)
Conductor of the Roberts Wesleyan Wind Ensemble and Orchestra, and associate professor at the college, Paul Shewan also performs in the trumpet section of the RPO. He has conducted the Eastman Wind Ensemble, the Air Force Band of Liberty, and the Varna Philharmonic Orchestra in Bulgaria. Shewan is also the founder of the Eastman/Roberts Chamber Players, which has performed such pieces as Milhaud’s La Création du Monde and Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat.
The Around the Town program is a community partnership in which the RPO moves from the concert hall into various neighborhoods to perform six free concerts per year designed to engage audiences with light classics and familiar favorites. Venues include houses of worship and other community locations. Around the Town concerts are sponsored by The Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation; Rochester Gas & Electric, an Energy East Company; and the Rochester Area Community Foundation.
