Guest Conductor Remmereit Steps in to Make RPO Debut One Season Early

April 29, 2009

Arild Remmereit Steps in for Yoav Talmi; RPO Joins Conductor’s Impressive List of Last-Minute Requests

Rochester, NY – “He came, he conducted, he conquered,” said the New York Times in 2005, describing Norwegian-born conductor Arild Remmereit in his performance with the Pittsburgh Symphony.  On Thursday, May 7 and Saturday, May 9 at 8:00 pm at Eastman Theatre, Mr. Remmereit – originally scheduled to make his RPO debut this coming November – will be stepping up to the RPO podium six months early to conduct the Philharmonics program of Rachmaninoff’s Second, substituting for conductor Yoav Talmi who withdrew due to illness.

Concert repertoire will remain the same except for the opening piece: instead of Talmi’s own Double Marriage of Figaro, Remmereit will open with Glinka’s Overture to the opera Ruslan and Ludmilla.  The rest of the program remains the same: Rachmaninoff’s glorious Symphony No. 2, and guest violinist Stefan Jackiw performing Mozart’s delightful and elegant Violin Concerto No. 4.  The 7:00 pm pre-concert chat host is TBA.

As the last-minute “go-to” guy, Remmereit seems to have created a successful niche for himself, substituting for such conducting luminaries as Ricardo Muti, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Christoph von Dohnanyi, and Antonio Pappano; with La Scala Opera Orchestra, l’Orchestre National de France, and the Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Vienna symphonies, among others.  With the successes of these last-minute substitutions – and the reviews Remmereit has received from his regularly-scheduled appearances – the New York Times moniker, “the hottest conductor you’ve never heard of,” may be on its way out…

Tickets for this concert range from $20-56, available online at www.rpo.org; by phone (454-2100) and in person from the RPO Box Office, Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. (non-concert Saturdays, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.).  The Philharmonics Series is sponsored by The Eastman Kodak Company and Bausch & Lomb. This concert is sponsored by Zimmer Sales & Services Corp. with additional support from the Mozart Performance Fund: Sarah D. Atkinson, M.D. and Steven Hess.  The RPO gratefully acknowledges PAETEC Communications Inc. for its PAETEC Philharmonic Partners program, which offers $9 Philharmonics Series tickets to local students.
