RPO's Warm Weather European Jaunt Goes Around the Town
July 16, 2009
Rochester, NY – On Thursday, July 23 at 12:30 p.m., the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra steps out for a free one-hour concert “al fresco” at Valley Manor (1570 East Avenue), part of Valley Manor’s 6th Annual Seniorsfirst Musicfest. Conductor Michael Butterman (The Louise and Henry Epstein Family Chair) leads the RPO under a large tent set up specifically for this event in the west parking lot. Some covered seating is available for this afternoon of light summer classics, and parking will be available along East Avenue.
The concert provides a whirlwind spring and summer European tour of works including the opening movement from Schumann’s “Spring” Symphony; Frederick Delius’ On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring; a foot-tapping polka by Johann Strauss, Jr. as well as the composer’s famous waltz, On the Beautiful Blue Danube; Morning Mood from Grieg’s Suite No. 1; Debussy’s Clair de Lune; and Smetana’s “The Moldau.”
The Around the Town program is a community partnership in which the RPO moves from the concert hall into various neighborhoods to perform free concerts per year designed to engage audiences with light classics and familiar favorites at houses of worship and other community locations. The partner venues assist with promoting the concert in their neighborhood and serve as liaison between the RPO and their community. This Around the Town concert is sponsored by the Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation, Marie C. & Joseph C. Wilson Foundation, and Xerox Corporation.
