By Popular Demand, RPO Brings Back “The Snowman” for orKIDStra Holiday Concert

November 24, 2009

Concert Features Animated Film with Live Musical Score

Rochester, NY – Last December, the RPO’s Holiday orKIDStra concert introduced Rochester families to The Snowman, the charming animated film that has been a holiday tradition in Europe (especially the United Kingdom) for years. On Sunday, December 13 at 2:00 pm at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, the film – with the RPO performing the live musical score by Howard Blake – will be the centerpiece of the Orchestra’s orKIDStra Holiday concert conducted by Michael Butterman (the Louise and Henry Epstein Family Chair).

Based on Raymond Briggs’ enchanting book of the same name, the 26-minute animated film, The Snowman, utilizes the soft, wintry watercolor images to relate the story of the friendship between a little boy and the snowman he creates, and the different worlds they inhabit.  “The touching tale really struck a chord with our audience last year,” said Butterman, adding that “the response leads us to believe that we may have a new holiday tradition on our hands.”  The Snowman books also will be available for purchase in the lobby prior to the concert.

The orKIDStra Holiday concert opens with the seasonal Winter Wonderland followed by Jeff Tyzik’s “Chanukah Suite,” Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride, and a holiday sing-along with well-known tunes like Deck the Halls, Jingle Bells, and more.  The 26-minute film follows; there is no intermission.  Additionally, The Snowman also will feature a small group of singers from The Boys Choir of the Bach Children’s Chorus (Karla Krogstad, director) chosen specifically for this special opportunity to sing the signature melody at the end of the film.  The Choir is composed of talented young boys ages 8-15.

General admission tickets are $15 for adults; $10 for children, with reserved $50 box seating, all available online 24/7 at www.rpo.org, by phone (454-2100) in person from the RPO Box Office, Monday-Saturday, 10:00 am-5:00 pm (non-concert Saturdays, 10:00 am-3:00 pm); and seven days a week at area Wegmans.  A convenience fee may apply.
