Rochester Philharmonic Brings The Magical Music of Disney, Gershwin's 'Porgy and Bess,' and Jeff's Birthday Benefit Bash to Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre

June 23, 2011

July 16, 23, and 30; RPO encourages summer casual attire.

ROCHESTER, NY – The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO), for the first time in recent history, will perform three Summer Season concerts in the newly renovated, and air-conditioned, Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre.  The three Saturday evening performances bring The Magical Music of Disney, Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess in Concert and Jeff’s Benefit Birthday Bash to the stage, and the RPO is encouraging summer casual attire.  The RPO’s Summer Season is presented by The Elaine P. And Richard U. Wilson Foundation.

Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess in Concert comes to Kodak Hall on Saturday, July 16 at 8:00 p.m.  The program opens with music from Gershwin and Ellington, and then following intermission, the RPO performs highlights from Porgy and Bess with acclaimed singers Kevin Deas and Janice Chandler-Eteme.

A week later, The Magical Music of Disney takes the stage on Saturday, July 23 at 7:00 p.m.  Children and their families travel on a musical journey, narrated by 92.5 WBEE’s Terry Clifford, to music from Disney’s animated films and Broadway shows including Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins, The Lion King, and Tarzan.  While the music is playing, screens and monitors will display images of your favorite Disney characters and scenes.  Children’s tickets for this concert start at just $10, and all kids are encouraged to dress up like their favorite Disney character!

The RPO will perform a special Birthday Benefit Bash to celebrate Jeff Tyzik’s 60th birthday—with all the ticket proceeds benefiting the RPO Musicians’ Pension Fund.  This special concert, with Tyzik conducting, takes place Saturday, July 30 at 8:00 p.m. in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre.  The program will treat audiences to a wide range of favorite works—including a few of Tyzik’s own—and will feature RPO musicians in solo roles.  There also will be a few additional surprises as Tyzik has invited colleagues and friends from over the years to join the Orchestra on stage.  Tyzik, in honor of his colleagues, has donated the fee he would have received to conduct this concert back to the Musicians’ Pension Fund.

Tickets to Gershwin’s ‘Porgy and Bess’ in Concert ($20 - $70), The Magical Music of Disney ($10 - $70), and Jeff’s Birthday Benefit Bash  Suggested minimum ticket prices for this concert are $25-zones 3 & 4, $45-zones 1 & 2, and $65 box seats can be purchased by calling the Eastman Theatre Box Office at 454-2100 or online at www.rpo.org.  To learn more about the entire RPO Summer Season, visit www.rpo.org/summer.
