RPO Also Announces New Strategic Plan, Anonymous Donation and Challenge Grant for 2014 Concert at Carnegie Hall


 ROCHESTER, NY – At its Annual Meeting today, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) announced that it ended its 2010-2011 season ending August 31, 2011 with a surplus of $20,371 on a budget of $9.3 million, its second consecutive season with a balanced budget. In 2009-2010, the Orchestra had ended the season with a $2,416 surplus. 

“We are proud that in this uncertain economic climate, we are able to announce a balanced budget for last season.  This milestone was achieved with tremendous sacrifice on the part of our musicians, conductors and employees, and with great generosity on the part of individuals in the region who value the RPO and its mission—and without compromising our commitment to our patrons, to our community, and to maintaining our tradition of artistic excellence.  Our musicians, conductors, and staff accepted enormous wage reductions with the knowledge that this was a necessary step toward stabilizing the RPO’s finances,” remarked Charles Owens, RPO President and CEO.

Board Chair Elizabeth Rice said, “My position as Board Chair began in September 2011, but I have been involved extensively with the RPO’s finances for a number of years as its Board Treasurer.  The work that Charles Owens, former Board Chair Suzanne Welch, the musicians, staff, and conductors have done to pave the way to a sound financial future for this organization is something to be applauded.  It is important to remember that while we are still taking finances season-by-season, and in some cases day-by-day, we are making headway toward a long-term sustainable outlook.  I look forward to what is yet to come!”

The 2010-2011 season saw record-setting subscription sales, totaling more than $2 million.  In support of the Education and Community Engagement programs, the Orchestra released a children’s recording of The Story of Babar, featuring actor John Lithgow as narrator.  The work is led by Principal Conductor of Education and Outreach Michael Butterman (The Louise and Henry Epstein Family Chair) and also features A Family for Baby Grand by Brad Ross, with Jennifer Carsillo, Butterman’s wife, narrating.

In June 2011, the Orchestra announced The Conductor Laureate Society, a group of donors who have pledged gifts in honor of Christopher Seaman’s 13-seasons as RPO Music Director.  In total, The Conductor Laureate Society raised $445,000 to celebrate Christopher and the work he will continue to do as the Orchestra’s Conductor Laureate.

During the meeting, Owens formally announced the RPO’s new Strategic Business Plan that began with the 2010-2011 Season.  The plan focuses on five areas in which to develop long-term goals:  Community Service, National Recognition, Financial Stability, Organizational Excellence, and Attraction and Retention of Artistic Talent. In the short-term, the RPO continues to focus on its core values: passionate dedication and outstanding musical performance at the highest artistic levels; a unique tradition of musical versatility; commitment to music education in its broadest sense; deep and enduring engagement with the community; a culture that inspires staff, board, volunteers and musicians to excel; a commitment to grow while living within our means.

RPO Music Director Arild Remmereit announced that an anonymous donor has come forward and pledged $50,000, and an additional $50,000 as a community challenge, to help fund the RPO’s return to Carnegie Hall in May 2014 as part of the Spring for Music festival.  The challenge will run through December 31, 2013 and is a separate initiative from the RPO’s ongoing fundraising for the annual campaign, which helps support the general operations of the Orchestra.  Remmereit noted that the return to Carnegie Hall is part of a long-term plan to raise national awareness of the RPO as one of this country’s premier orchestras.

Also, during the Annual Meeting, board members were elected.  Returning board members for the term expiring January 2014 are Patrick Kelly, Vice President and Wealth Manager, JP Morgan Chase Bank, Wealth Management; Nannette P. Nocon, Private Wealth Advisor, Ameriprise Financial; Paula H. Pattison, Principal Scientist & Quality Engineer, Ortho Clinical Diagnostics, a Johnson & Johnson Company; Gregory W. Smith, President & Chief Operating Officer, Jay Advertising; and Jules L. Smith, Partner, Blitman & King LLP. New board members elected are the following:

 

Megan Henry

Megan Henry, CTFA, a Rochester native, received her undergraduate degree from DePauw University, and majored in economics and management. Ms. Henry has worked locally in banking and wealth management for 24 years. She is currently Managing Director of Trust Services for Manning & Napier Advisors, LLC, and Executive Vice President of Exeter Trust Company. She currently serves on the Bishop’s Stewardship Council for the Diocese of Rochester, the Finance Council of St. Thomas More Church, and the Executive Committee of the Estate Planning Council. She has served on the boards of Cerebral Palsy Association of Rochester (past Board Chairperson), the New York Cerebral Palsy Association, Al Sigl Center’s Planned Giving Marketing Advisory Committee, the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and Monroe Golf Club.


Ross P. Lanzafame

Ross P. Lanzafame is a partner at Harter Secrest & Emery LLP.  Prior to attending law school and earning his law degree, Mr. Lanzafame managed the neonatal intensive care unit and all surgical units at a major area hospital for four years. Community involvement includes membership on the Board of Directors of the American Lung Association (Chair-elect, National Board of Directors, and Past Speaker of the Nationwide Assembly); The Community Place of Greater Rochester, Inc. (Past Chair); American Lung Association of New York, Inc. (Past Chair); The Rochester Friendly Home, Inc. (Chair); and the Cornell Alumni Association of Greater Rochester, Inc. (Past President).  Mr. Lanzafame is a member of the National Association of Chiropractic Attorneys (Treasurer), the American Bar Association, and the New York State Bar Association (Past Chair, Health Law Section). Mr. Lanzafame, a native Rochesterian, is a graduate of McQuaid Jesuit High School; Cornell University, B.S. (Biology, 1977); Cornell University Graduate School of Business, Masters of Professional Studies (Hospital and Health Services Administration, 1979); and State University of New York at Buffalo, J.D., cum laude, 1986.


Robert B. Stiles

Robert B. Stiles was Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Bausch & Lomb until his retirement from the company. He has served on a number of non-profit boards, is a member of the Hillside Family of Agencies Board of Governors and the Albany Law School, Union University, Board of Trustees, and is a trustee emeritus of the Seneca Zoo Society. Mr. Stiles is also involved with several community organizations, including the Monroe County Bar Association’s Lawyers for Learning program at School 29 in the city school district. He is a graduate of Hamilton College and Albany Law School, Union University.
