orKIDStra Series Concert Explores "Things with Strings"

March 13, 2006

Rochester, N.Y.; Mar. 13, 2006 – Children of all ages will love exploring the magical world of musical instruments with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Principal Conductor for Education and Outreach Michael Butterman (The Louise and Henry Epstein Family Chair) leads this interactive concert featuring the instruments of the string family – including violins, violas, cellos, basses and harp. Meet all the “Things with Strings” on Sunday, April 2 at 2 p.m. in the Performance Hall at Hochstein. There will be a pre-concert activity beginning at 1 p.m., where Suzuki-method string students will perform. Although ideal for children of all ages, orKIDStra concerts are especially geared towards families with young children ages 3-9.

The orKIDStra Series is sponsored by Wendy’s Restaurants of Rochester.

RPO Concertmaster Juliana Athayde (The Caroline W. Gannett & Clayla Ward Chair) is featured as soloist in a selection from Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5. Violinist Perrin Yang will play electric violin – an instrument not usually heard with orchestra – in Jeff Tyzik’s piece Blue Funk, and Principal Harp Grace Wong (The Eileen Malone Chair, a Tribute by Mr. and Mrs. Harcourt M. Sylvester) performs an excerpt from Handel’s Harp Concerto in B-flat. Additional works by Tchaikovsky, Bach and Grieg are on the program, and young violinist Eddy Wang will also be featured.

General admission tickets for orKIDStra Series concerts are $12 for adults and $10 for children, available online at www.rpo.org, by phone (454-2100) and in person from the RPO Box Office, and at all Wegmans Video Departments. RPO Box Office Hours are Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. (non-concert Saturdays, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.). The Wegmans Video Department is open seven days a week, 10:30 a.m.-9 p.m. A convenience fee may apply.
