Rochester, NY – The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra kicks off its 2013–14 RPO in Ithaca series with Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony on November 15, 2013, the first of three Friday, 7:30 p.m. concerts in Ford Hall at Ithaca College.

The program – also performed in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre on Thursday, November 14 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, November 16 at 8 p.m. – features internationally-renowned Japanese guest conductor Junichi Hirokami. The RPO’s own Principal Oboe Erik Behr (The Dr. Jacques M. Lipson Chair) takes center stage for Richard Strauss’s virtuosic Oboe Concerto. The program also includes Hindemith’s Concert Music for Strings and Brass, and Rachmaninoff’s ravishingly beautiful Symphony No. 2, a masterwork of late Romantic music.

Following a 2012 strategic initiative by the RPO to broaden its regional reach, the multi-year partnership with Ithaca College School of Music began with one concert in the Orchestra’s 2011-12 season, followed by two concerts in 2012-13. This season’s three-concert series also includes Gershwin & Ellington on February 7 (Michael Morgan, guest conductor; Joyce Yang, piano) and Mozart & Tchaikovsky on April 4 (Neil Varon, guest conductor; *RPO Principal Clarinet Kenneth Grant).

The RPO in Ithaca series is made possible in part by Corning Incorporated Foundation, which has contributed to these performances since the beginning.

“We are pleased to participate in our region in this significant way,” says Karen Martin, Foundation president. “Providing local underwriting support that enables people to experience the superb offerings of the RPO is a great fit for the mission of Corning Incorporated Foundation.”

“Corning Incorporated Foundation’s assistance plays a crucial role in allowing our orchestra to positively impact Ithaca and the surrounding Finger Lakes region,” adds RPO President and CEO Charles Owens. “We are grateful for its leadership support, and proud to partner with the Foundation and Ithaca College School of Music to help enhance the quality of life in this beautiful region.”

Tickets to any RPO in Ithaca concert ($25/$10 students) are available in person at the Eastman Theatre Box Office (433 East Main Street) and at Wegmans That’s T.H.E. Ticket! locations (including Ithaca), by phone at (585) 454-2100, or online at rpo.org. A three-concert subscription package is available for $60/$30 students.

The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra has been committed to enriching and inspiring our community through the art of music since its founding in 1922. The RPO presents up to 150 concerts a year, serving nearly 200,000 people through ticketed events, education and community engagement activities, and concerts in schools and community centers throughout the region. Notable former music directors include Eugene Goossens, José Iturbi, Erich Leinsdorf, David Zinman, and Conductor Laureate Christopher Seaman; Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik has earned a national reputation for excellence in pops programming during his 20-year tenure with the RPO. With Michael Butterman as Principal Conductor for Education and Outreach (The Louise and Henry Epstein Family Chair) – the first position of its kind in the country – the RPO reaches 14,000 children through its specific programs for school-aged children.
