RPO PRESENTS A DOZEN SUMMER CONCERTS

Includes four, FREE Around the Town City Neighborhood Ensemble Concerts

 

Rochester, NY –  The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) announces its Summer Season, sponsored by the Elaine P. and Richard U. Wilson Foundation, which includes 12 concerts from July 4 – August 1, 2017. Music Director Ward Stare will conduct six of the eight orchestral concerts – two of which are free – and four other free concerts feature RPO ensembles in outdoor, neighborhood spaces.

 

The summer orchestra concerts kick off on Tuesday, July 4 with the annual, FREE, City-sponsored Independence Day Concert at Main Street Bridge featuring patriotic favorites from 9-10 p.m., followed by the always “ah”-inspiring downtown fireworks display. Ward Stare conducts.

 

Wednesday, July 5 brings the annual, FREE, Monroe County-sponsored Concert by the Shore: RPO at Ontario Beach concert at 7:30 p.m. Ward Stare conducts a program of pops and patriotic favorites.

 

On Friday, July 7 at 8:30 p.m., Ward Stare conducts another perennial favorite, Summer Spectacular with Fireworks: RPO at Geneseo at SUNY Geneseo’s Saratoga Field (rain location: Wadsworth Auditorium). Tickets are available online at rpo.org, by phone at (585) 454-2100, and at these locations: Geneseo United Methodist Church, Central Presbyterian Church, David Mann’s Jewelers, Noreen’s Hallmark Gift Shop, and the John W. Chanler Agency. The concert is sponsored by The Chanler Family and the Gertrude Chanler RPO Fund at the Rochester Area Community Foundation.

 

Next, Ward Stare and the RPO take the field on Friday, July 21 at 8:30 p.m. for Play Ball! RPO at Frontier Field following the 6:05 game versus the Toledo Mud Hens, with post-concert fireworks. Admission is free with game ticket, available at redwingsbaseball.com or by calling 585-423-WING (9464). Sponsored by the County of Monroe.

 

Already announced, this year’s RPO @ CMAC concert, Summer Sway: Dance Music from Around the World,takes place July 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC, 3355 Marvin Sands Drive, Canandaigua). Led by Ward Stare, the concert will feature beloved dance favorites from around the world. Ticket prices range from $15-$45 (before fees), and children 18 and under are free under the shell (excluding table seating) and on the lawn (limit 2 child tickets per 1 adult ticket purchased), and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com, by calling 800-745-3000, or in person at the Blue Cross Arena Box Office (One War Memorial Square) and CMAC Box Offices. On Sunday, July 23, a special fundraising event, Concert on the Green at Oak Hill, kicks off at 5 p.m. at Oak Hill Country Club (145 Kilbourn Road). Thursday, July 27 at 7:30 p.m. marks the RPO’s 23rd annual fundraiser for and at Temple B’rith Kodesh (2131 Elmwood Avenue). General admission tickets to RPO @ TBK: Pops and Classics Concert are $25, $10 for students, and free for children under 13 accompanied by an adult. Reserved tickets start at $50. Guest conductor is Daniel Meyer, and a dessert reception with RPO musicians follows. Tickets may be purchased in person at the TBK office, by calling (585) 244-7060, x229, or by emailing info@tbk.org.

 

The last of the summer orchestral concerts is An Evening with the Symphony: RPO at Inlet led by guest conductor Daniel Meyer on Friday, July 28 at 7:30 p.m. The Fulton Chain of Lakes Performing Arts Council once again presents the RPO under the tent at beautiful Arrowhead Park in Inlet, NY. Tickets are $30/$15 for children 19 and under, with lawn seating for $10 (weather permitting, bring chairs).  Reserve tickets at the Inlet Tourist Office (315-357-5501) or Old Forge Tourist Info Office (315-369-6983). Parking will be available at Woods Inn, Town Parking Lot, St. Anthony’s Church, Fern Park on S. Shore Rd. Shuttle bus service will run all evening.

 

The City of Rochester once again presents four, hour-long Around the Town Neighborhood Ensemble Concerts. A huge success with city residents last summer, all performances are FREE, take place on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-7:30 p.m., and feature various ensembles made of up RPO musicians. Please note that these performances do not feature the entire RPO:

  • Tuesday, July 11: RPO Jazz Trio at Susan B. Anthony Square (31 Madison St., 14608, SW Quadrant). Rain location: The DePaul Carriage Factory Apartments, 33 Litchfield St.
  • Tuesday, July 18: RPO Brass Quintet at the corner of Joseph & Clifford Avenues (NE Quadrant), followed by performances of the Garth Fagan Youth Dance Ensemble and the Rochester Latino Theatre Company. Rain location: Avenue D R-Center, 200 Ave D.
  • Tuesday, July 25: RPO Brass Quintet at Barrington Park (aka Park Avenue Green, on corner of Barrington St. & Park Ave., SE Quadrant) in conjunction with neighborhood’s annual Cops and Dogs event (hot dog cookout with members of the Rochester Police Department). Rain location: Immanuel Baptist Church, 815 Park Ave.
  • Tuesday, August 1: RPO Marimba Band at Maplewood Rose Garden (250 Maplewood Ave., 14613, NW Quadrant). Rain location: Edgerton R-Center, 41 Backus St.

In addition to RPO and RPO ensemble performances this summer, the Rochester Philharmonic League (RPL) presents Young Artists in Concert – A Celebration of Winners on Sunday, July 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Eastman School of Music’s Kilbourn Hall. The FREE, public recital will feature the RPL’s award and scholarship winners from its 62nd annual Young Artist Auditions, which took place in March. Please note that this performance does not feature the RPO.

The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) has been committed to enriching and inspiring our community through the art of music since its founding in 1922. The RPO presents approximately 140 concerts and broadcasts a year, serving up to 160,000 people through ticketed events, education and community engagement activities, and concerts in schools and community centers throughout the region. Recently appointed 12th Music Director Ward Stare joins the ranks of former notable RPO music directors, including Eugene Goossens, José Iturbi, Erich Leinsdorf, David Zinman and Conductor Laureate Christopher Seaman. Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik has earned a national reputation for excellence in pops programming during his 23-year tenure with the RPO. With Michael Butterman as Principal Conductor for Education and Community Engagement (The Louise and Henry Epstein Family Chair), the RPO reaches more than 16,000 children through its specific programs for school-aged children.
