Favorite books/movies: To Kill a Mockingbird, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, and The Natural
What kinds of music do you enjoy listening to? Jazz & classical
And if you had to pick just one, what’s your favorite piece? Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances
What do you most enjoy about living in the Rochester area? It has almost all the advantages of a larger city without all the trappings!
What are your favorite restaurants in Rochester, and why? Aladdin’s: great, fresh, healthy food that is reasonably priced!
The RPO is essential to the Rochester community because … it raises the quality of life in our community. We can educate, entertain, and touch people’s souls.
What sports team(s) do you root for? NY Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, St. Louis Cardinals
What is your favorite way to spend your day off? Having a meaningful practice session, playing a round of golf, and spending quality time with my wife and son.
What is your most memorable musical experience? Premiering Jeff Tyzik’s Concerto for Trombone with the RPO (with the composer conducting) and later performing the piece at Carnegie Hall with Mark Scatterday and the Eastman Wind Ensemble.
Biography
An RPO member since 1989, Principal Trombonist Mark Kellogg has embraced a wide variety of performing roles throughout his career, from orchestral performer to jazz musician to recitalist and soloist. Aside from his performing duties in the orchestra, he is also Associate Professor of Trombone, Euphonium, and Chamber Music at the Eastman School of Music. A frequent guest at low brass symposia in the United States and Asia, Kellogg has also enjoyed a 20-year musical partnership with RPO Principal Pianist Joseph Werner, performing at colleges and universities across the country. He has two solo CDs to his credit; a jazz recording with pianist Tony Caramia entitled Upstate Standards and a classical recording of French repertoire with Joseph Werner entitled Impressions. A native of Hannibal, N.Y., Kellogg lives in Pittsford with his wife, RPO flutist Joanna Bassett, and their son Rob. (www.markkelloggmusic.com)
