SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 9
2018 is a year in which the world celebrates the towering musical legacy of Leonard Bernstein (1918–1990). Hear Bernstein’s “Age of Anxiety,” a brilliant fusion of symphony and piano concerto which spotlights Rochester favorite Misha Dichter. Barber’s intensely lyrical Essay and Shostakovich’s carnivalesque symphony—both notably interpreted by Bernstein as a conductor—round out this not-to-be-missed “salute to Lenny.”
Join conductors and special guests for a free, fun, and lively discussion about the music before each Philharmonics Series concert. Talks start one hour before the concert and end with ample time for you to refresh before the concert begins. Talks are held on the orchestra level of the Eastman Theatre.
New Pre-Concert Lecture Series
Want to dive even deeper? Sign up for Music Explorers - a new pre-concert lecture series with the Eastman Community Music School. Three 60 min. audit-only lectures on February 14, 21, and 28 offer historical context and informal musical/stylistic analysis of the Bernstein Centennial Repertoire. Live demonstrations, audio/visual examples and class discussion help uncover the meaning of music in a social setting.
