Third graders from the Rochester City School District who participate in the Primary Ensembles program experience a concert performed by the RPO at the Eastman Theatre. During the Primary Concert, the children learn how the different families of instruments come together to make the orchestra and how musicians of the orchestra work together as a team to make music. Depending on availability of seats, first through third grade students from outside the Rochester City School District may be invited to attend.
This season’s program will feature Peter Vs. the Wolf, an orchestral courtroom comedy for young audiences based on the characters, events, and music of the symphonic fairy tale Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev.
Michael Butterman, conductor

IMPORTANT CHANGES – PLEASE READ
The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra will begin charging a $5 per student fee for all of our education concerts starting this year (2011-2012). This carefully researched decision is necessary in order to ensure the RPO’s education concerts are financially viable, protecting our ability to continue these programs as well as the overall fiscal health of our orchestra. By charging a nominal fee for these concerts, the RPO will be aligned with other educational arts programs, both locally and nationally. In order to make this transition as easy as possible, we are providing the following guidelines:
- Due to sponsorship requirements, Rochester City School District students will be given preference in scheduling.
- We are now allowing all schools to bring any or all grade levels (1st through 3rd).
- Teachers and chaperones will not be charged. We are recommending 2 per class. Please contact us if you feel you have special circumstances.
- Schools will be invoiced immediately following the concert for payment.
Thank you for your understanding of our new policies – and for your continued support of the RPO’s education concerts!
