Ives: The Unanswered Question
Joseph Schwantner: Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra
Brahms: Symphony No. 1

This concert is a study in contrasts – from the theater and drama of Ives and Schwanter to the traditional sounds of Brahms’ first symphony. Percussionist Jim Tiller will play 20 different instruments in this dramatic work that might make you think you’re at the movies. It took Brahms 20 years to write his first symphony – as the assumed successor to Beethoven, he felt enormous pressure from the great composer’s shadow. The symphony is well worth the wait, as a heroic and winding journey from tragedy to light.
