Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition
Mussorgsky originally composed Pictures at an Exhibition as a solo piano piece; Ravel’s orchestration turned it into one of the most dynamic, imaginative, colorful works for large orchestra. Each movement captures the spirit of a particular painting, tied together by a noble theme. Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24 was one of only two written in a minor key, and it demonstrates his quintessential creativity. Jonathan Biss is renowned for his delicate, refined Mozart playing, and this promises to be a performance to remember.

RoCo Artwork on Display During Pictures at an Exhibition
In keeping with the evening’s theme, a free exhibit of approximately a dozen pieces of art from Rochester Contemporary (RoCo) art gallery recreates a modern experience of Mussorgsky’s inspiring gallery visit. The exhibit will be on display to RPO ticket holders in the balcony lobby on May 10 and 12 before the concert and during intermission. The exhibit will feature the works of RoCo company members: Anne Havens, Maria Friske, Colleen Buzzard and musician Gregory Paul.
