Joined the RPO in 2011

Jeffrey Gray joined the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in 2011 as bass trombonist. He is also the bass trombonist with the Grant Park Orchestra of Chicago; joining that orchestra in 2003. Gray previously held the same position with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra from 2000 to 2011. Gray has performed with The Philadelphia Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, and the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, and was a member of the National Repertory Orchestra. He can be heard on recordings with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, and the Grant Park Orchestra.

He received his formal music training at Bowling Green State University and The Juilliard School. His teachers include Paul Hunt, Dennis Smith, Don Harwood, Joe Alessi, Steve Norrell, and Blair Bollinger. In 2000, Gray was the winner of two international competitions: the Lewis Van Haney Philharmonic Prize Competition and the Donald Yaxley Solo Competition, both sponsored by the International Trombone Association. He is one of the few trombonists to win both international competitions for bass trombone in the same year. As a result of these competitions, he was a featured performer at the 2000 International Trombone Festival in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Gray began teaching at Ithaca College in 2006. He teaches trombone, bass trombone, brass chamber music, conducts the trombone ensemble, and teaches brass symphonic and operatic repertoire. He is also on the faculty at the Eastman Community Music School where he teaches trombone and conducts the trombone choir.
