Instrument: Viola
With the RPO since: 1984
My earliest musical memories are traveling around the country performing some of the first Suzuki School demonstrations and playing violin trios with my older brother and younger sister.
I knew I would make music my career when I attended the Interlochen Arts Academy for high school and then won a four year full-tuition scholarship to the Eastman School of Music.
Most influential teachers: Ivan Galamian, Millard Taylor, Paul Doktor, Margaret Pardee and Harry Shub.
Favorite composer and/or musical period: Western Music encompasses far too many gifted composers and interesting musical styles for me to play favorites to just one. It is difficult, though, to ignore the intense drama and power of music from the Romantic period. With that said, we should remind ourselves of both the enormous and incredibly innovative contributions of the American composer.
What do you most enjoy about performing? Live music uplifts and stimulates our imagination in a timeless atmosphere. I like connecting with an audience and encouraging them to be a part of this magic and excitement that is unique to the world of live music.
What is your favorite part of being a member of the RPO? I enjoy the variety of music we play whether it is Classical or Jazz, and in particular, repertoire from the Romantic period which requires an enlarged orchestra.
When I'm not onstage, you might find me teaching at Nazareth College, playing a solo or a chamber music concert, or sailing with my family.
I love to dine at my house with my family and friends.
My favorite thing about Rochester is the quality of life and the proximity to the rest of the country. And, Sibley Music Library!
What do think is the Orchestra's most important role in our community? To be a leader in presenting the types of entertainment and education venues that are not otherwise available or accessible to the community at large.
