Kathleen Murphy Kemp
Kathleen Murphy Kemp

Instrument: Cello

With the RPO since: 1977

My earliest musical memory is listening to my mom give piano lessons and hearing both my parents play trumpet solos with the park band.

I knew I would make music my career when I went to my first music camp - New England Music Camp in Maine. I loved playing in the orchestra.

Most influential teachers: Jeff Holm, Ron Leonard, Alan Harris and Gabor Rijto.

Favorite composer(s): Bach and Brahms

What do you most enjoy about performing? Performing music takes away the everyday stresses of life and provides some peace.

What is your favorite part of being a member of the RPO? Going to work and playing with others who also enjoy music.

When I'm not onstage, you might find me teaching at the Eastman School of Music or Hochstein Music School, or at a hockey rink watching my son play.

I've always thought it might be fun to be an elementary teacher. I love teaching young children. They are like sponges and are still awed by everything new.

I love to dine at home. Our family schedule is often so bizarre that we're not together as often as we'd like. It's a treat when we're able to eat as a family.

My favorite thing about Rochester is the many opportunities and outlets for families.

What do think is the Orchestra's most important role in our community? To provide a beautiful sanctuary for the soul of the community.
