With the RPO since: 1978
Favorite time of year in Rochester, and why... Spring: emergence of the delicate greens as winter recedes, along with moderate temperatures.
Hometown: NYC. I was born and lived for six years in lower Manhattan along the East River. The playground of my first school was underneath the Manhattan Bridge!
Drink or food you're most likely to order at Java's: Hazelnut decaf
When not performing with the RPO, you can find me... cooking, reading, studying French, learning classical guitar, gardening, biking, canoeing.
First music-related memory. Listening to old 78s (opera, Mischa Elman, Mozart Piano Concertos) with my family.
I decided to be a professional musician when... I became frustrated with graduate studies in Classics. My goal when I first left home for Haverford College was astronomy.
Favorite travel destination: Southern France, Colorado
Influential teachers: Fritz Magg, Leopold Teraspulsky and Janos Starker at Indiana University. Terry, with his boundless enthusiasm, rescued me from the academic life that was making me so unhappy; Magg specialized in intimate chamber music interpretation; Starker demonstrated how to solve problems on the cello and how to learn new material as efficiently as possible.
Favorite ice cream flavor: Boysenberry tofutti
What are your other "hidden" talents: I make and repair bows for all the stringed instruments in my studio at 50 Chestnut Street (585-546-3310).
Do you teach private students? Yes, and I try to emphasize how to practice intelligently - so important to young, developing students.
What other orchestras have you performed with? Buffalo Philharmonic (1973-78), Aspen Festival Orchestra (1973-75)
Favorite restaurant in town and why. Tandoor in Henrietta: fabulous Tuesday evening Indian dinner buffet; also Golden Port Dim Sum on East Avenue; Shanghai; Cantonese House.
What types of music do you like to listen to? All kinds of classical music. Also, because of my interest in the languages, French and Brazilian popular music.
The RPO is essential to Rochester because... we communicate to all age groups through a vital art form. We present a unique range of music with our classical, pops and educational-outreach programs all over the community.
My favorite part of working in the RPO is... Getting to hear the exciting blend of so many sound colors through the talents of my talented colleagues and seeing the delighted reaction of our audiences wherever we perform.
If someone were visiting Rochester, what would you tell them to go see or do? Come to one of our concerts at the Eastman Theatre!
