Primary Ensembles

Ensembles from the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra visit approximately 3,000 third grade students in all Rochester city elementary schools at no cost. In order to help students choose an instrument to study in the fourth grade, the musicians explain the mechanics of playing their instruments, demonstrate how instruments make their sound, and discuss the instrument families.

The performances are interactive and relate to the social studies curriculum. Following the performance, the musicians visit classrooms individually, providing a more intimate reinforcement of the concepts taught on stage. Teachers receive curriculum guides to prepare their students before the performance and follow-up activities to use after.

Funded by the City of Rochester, Robert J. Duffy, Mayor; Glover Crask Charitable Trust; Kilian J. & Caroline F. Schmitt Foundation, Castle Fund for Music Education at Rochester Area Community Foundation, Fred & Floy Willmott Foundation and Ames-Amzalak Charitable Trust.
