Underground Railway Theater
Underground Railway Theater creates dynamic connections between high-quality professional theater and the community. Combining actors, puppets and music, URT presents theater of social content and great visual beauty — theater that challenges and delights, as well as informs and celebrates. The Theater was founded in 1976 in Oberlin, Ohio, one of the last stops in the Mid-western branch of the Underground Railroad. The company took its name from this chapter in American history, carrying on in a spirit of hope and inter-cultural collaboration. URT performs regularly with major orchestras throughout the country, has been in residence at the Smithsonian Institute, and has appeared at Lincoln Center, Arena Stage, and the Kennedy Center. The company has received citations for excellence from UNIMA (the International Guild of Puppetry) and has performed in France, Spain, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
