Mackerras gives each scene its own well-defined character. He is extremely musical, exciting, and graceful depending on the picture. While not woven (or, rather, edited) into Slatkin’s flowing musical whole, it’s still far more than just a bunch of pictures. The sound is clear, natural, superbly balanced, and free of gimmicks. The orchestra is superb: in "Catacombs," the brass is thrilling and the woodwinds serene; "Baba Yaga" pulses with excitement and has a smooth-as-ice midsection; and the "Gate at Kiev" feels like a total triumph.

Slatkin’s recording too is clear, natural, superbly balanced, and free of gimmicks. And he too leans into the music, giving it edge and forward thrust. Long lines are alive with shape and point. And the smooth woodwinds often are a perfect foil for the massive ensemble. While the final two scenes aren’t as propulsively exciting as Mackerras makes them, the depth and stereo breadth of the engineering is even better, letting you hear the subtlety with which Ravel “paints” with orchestral colors. Above all, this recording is edited with such care and performed with such flow that all the pictures are linked together into one magnificent symphonic whole.

WebTips:  Slatkin has recorded this work many times on many labels in various arrangements. This RCA recording has been released twice on albums called “Russian Showpieces” and “The Russian Album,” both with the same companion works. The National Philharmonic is a London orchestra used only for recordings and films, not concerts. Mackerras’ recording also has been released twice by Virgin Classics, both times with the same companion works.
