The Voices of Praise (VOP) was developed as a means for young adults to sing praises unto God with a contemporary twist and feel. The VOP ministers through song every second and fourth Sunday at the Baber A.M.E. Church where the Rev. James C. Simmons is the pastor. Besides singing at church, the VOP also participates in community events. One such event was in the fall of 2010, when the VOP were the featured musical guests at the Memorial Art Gallery’s Fashion Show. The name Voices of Praise was chosen because the focus is not on the individuals in the group, but rather the combined voices blended in praise unto God.
Julius Dicks
Born in Sumter, S.C., Dicks showed a love for music at an early age, playing the piano for local churches while still in elementary school. He attended Clark University in Atlanta, then travelled to Rochester to continue his education at SUNY Brockport, graduating with a B.A. in Music Theory. Since that time, Julius has served as Minister of Music at several churches in the Rochester area and is currently serving in that role at Baber A.M.E. Church. Known locally as “The Maestro,” Dicks maintains a respect and on-going relationship with many churches and musicians in the Rochester area.
