Andreas Delfs enjoys great success in both the operatic and symphonic fields regularly collaborating with leading opera houses and orchestras throughout the world. He currently holds the position of Conductor Laureate of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra where, during twelve seasons as Music Director, he was instrumental in the orchestra’s rise to national prominence through acclaimed recording projects, commissions of new works, world premieres and innovative music education programmes.
Andreas has held chief artistic posts with Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Bern Opera and as General Music Director of Hannover. Andreas Delfs has also worked closely with some of the world’s most renowned solo artists, including Yo Yo Ma, Midori, Maurizio Pollini, Mstislav Rostropovich and Renée Fleming. A busy guest conductor, highlights in the 2011/12 season include appearances with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra Washington, Copenhagen Philharmonic, and Britten Sinfonia in London. His recent operatic activities have included the highly acclaimed Ariadne auf Naxos at National Opera Washington, and Turandot at Opera Lyra Ottawa.
Born in Flensburg, Germany, Andreas Delfs studied with Christoph von Dohnányi and Aldo Ceccato at the Hamburg Conservatory, and with Jorge Mester and Sixten Ehrling at The Juilliard School. He lives with his wife Amy and their four children in Ithaca, New York, and also keeps a base in Germany.
