Ski Trooper Monument Recalls Family History
 Greetings from one of Vail's neat monuments, the Ski Trooper from the Tenth Mountain Division. I especially like this memorial because it reminds me of my father-in-law's service in the Special Forces during World War II. As one of the early recreational climber/skiers in the Continental Divide and having mined gold in Alaska before the war, he was asked to write a manual for the Special Forces about winter survival. "Pop" enlisted as a paratrooper with the Special Forces. He would tell some very colorful stories to us about his military and mountaineering experiences before he passed away in 1998. His long wooden skis and a copy of the manual remain at the family homestead. --Linda Kirkwood, Viola
